How to Restake ETH With Renzo and Zerion

You can stake, and then you restake. Restaking ETH can be a great way to boost your yield. Yet the technology is complicated and filled with jargon. In this guide, we explore what restaking is, how Renzo Protocol makes it simple, and how you can restake ETH with Zerion Wallet

What is ETH Restaking?

First, let’s get clear on what regular ETH staking does.

When you stake ETH to secure the Ethereum blockchain, your ETH is used as a security deposit. If you try to cheat (e.g., proposing a block that sends more ETH to your address), your stake is slashed. If you propose valid blocks, you earn more ETH.

As of October 2024, over 1 million validators staked 34 million ETH to secure Ethereum. This is a huge amount of resources that backs the security of the blockchain.

For new projects, bootstrapping a “proof-of-stake” is difficult. Why should people stake their tokens and not ETH?

That’s where restaking comes in.

Restaking uses the already staked ETH to secure another network or protocol. In return, you earn a higher yield: ETH from Ethereum and rewards from protocols that rely on restaking for security.

Of course, this comes with risks. By restaking, you take on the risks of slashing in these additional protocols.

To start restaking, you can run the special software on your ETH validator or use a restaking protocol.

EigenLayer is the best-known and largest restaking protocol, with over 4 million restaked ETH. However, it’s quite a complex protocol with dozens of supported tokens and protocols with varied rewards.

For most people, it’s easier to use an interface like Renzo Protocol.

How Renzo Protocol Works

Renzo Protocol functions as an interface for major restaking protocols: EigenLayer, Symbiotic, and Jito Network.

For example, to restake ETH with EigenLayer, you can simply deposit ETH or stETH, and Renzo takes care of everything.

As a representation of your deposit, Renzo gives you ezETH, the liquid restaking token. It’s a reward-bearing token, which means accumulated staking and restaking rewards are reflected in its price. You can use ezETH in DeFi, transfer it, or sell it anytime.

Another great thing about Renzo is that you can use it on Layer-2 networks, where gas fees are much lower. This means you can easily manage your staked ETH, regularly adding to it or selling some to effectively withdraw rewards.

Finally, you can also restake with Renzo Protocol right in Zerion.

How to Restake ETH in Zerion

With Zerion Earn, you can restake ETH with Renzon on mainnet Ethereum and Linea, a Layer-2 network.

Here is how to restake on Linea, where gas fees are much lower:

  1. Open your Zerion Wallet
  2. Navigate to app.zerion.io/earn
  3. Select Linea as the network
  4. Select ETH or stETH
  5. Select Renzo Restaking
  6. Sign the transactions

You’ll see your restaked ETH positions in Zerion’s transaction history and in Earn’s Manage tab.

You can request the withdrawal of your ETH and get it back after a 10-day period. You can also simply swap your ezETH without waiting.

It’s Time to Earn

In this post, we’ve looked at what restaking is and how it works. We’ve then explored how Renzo Protocol makes it very easy to restake ETH. Finally, we reviewed the steps you can take to restake ETH right in Zerion.

Now it’s time to put this into practice — use Zerion Earn
